Cheesecloth

Name of item              : Cheesecloth
Function                      : Usually to making cheese, also for strain something
How to clean               : Usually you just can use cheesecloth once

Cheesecloth is a cotton cloth that is loosely woven and resembles gauze. It comes in seven grades, from open to extra-fine weave. The grade is determined by the amount of threads per inch constructed in each direction.

The primary use of cheesecloth is for making cheese, but it is also a great tool for straining water and capturing solids in various recipes. You might want to have cheesecloth on hand if you’re making homemade almond milk, homemade ketchup, infused oils, fresh fruit drinks, and more.

Cheesecloth Alternatives
Here are 3 alternatives to cheesecloth
  • Fine-Mesh Bags: These bags are often used for making almond milk or for holding grains when making beer. They are typically made of nylon, come in multiple sizes, and can be machine washed. They won't stretch over time and are resistant to picking up stains or food odors
  • Flour Sack Cloths: Flour sack towels are thin cotton towels with a loose weave — the weave is tighter than cheesecloth but looser than average dish towels.
  • Men's Large Handkerchiefs: Cheap, easy to clean, reusable. Just be sure you separate which handkerchiefs are for kitchen use and which ones are for other things.

Waffle Maker

Name of item              : Waffle Maker
Function                      : To help making waffle
How to clean               : use dry napkin to wipe it

Also sometimes called a waffle iron, a waffle maker is a small electric counter appliance that is used
for making waffles. These delicacies are breakfast fare with a sweet dessert flavor. Similar to pancakes, but lighter and sweeter with a style that gives the appearance that they were difficult to make. But they aren't time-consuming at all.

The eggs in waffles are what makes them light and delicate. The waffle maker completes the presentation with a awesome shape and sometimes grid-like pattern design that makes them irresistible.

Making waffles takes few ingredients and very little time, given the nature of the waffle maker. The appliance shapes the waffle including the series of grids which become lovely small recesses for filling with butter and/or syrup.

Though not necessarily a kitchen essential, you will find a waffle maker in many kitchens, because it brings home the restaurant breakfast experience. If you're interested in buying a waffle maker, be sure to read about the different types below before making a decision.

Waffle makers are sold mostly as stand alone appliances, but one can also be a component of a counter grill or griddle set that has interchangeable metal nonstick plates. For the person who lacks counter or storage space, buying a combination appliance that can multitask with a waffle function, can be the ideal solution. On the other hand, a stand alone waffle maker does not take much room to store - some can even be stored on their sides, though they do vary in size by design.

There are basically two types of waffle makers. Those that make two or four small square 4" waffles (traditional style) and waffle irons that make oversized (6") round deep-pocket Belgian style waffles. Models that make other waffle shapes can also be fun to use. It's really a matter of preference, though you should also consider the amount of people you'll be serving.
Deep-pocket waffles are a hit with many and most of these large waffles can easily be separated once done, into smaller sections for sharing. Since waffles are made rather quickly - about 3 - 5 minutes, you can easily serve a family in short order.

For some families, a waffle maker is a must-have quick breakfast appliance. They will make several waffles at a time and freeze them individually, once they have cooled. This can be extremely convenient for a fast breakfast fare another day.

Previously baked small square waffles can usually be reheated in a wide-slot toaster, but Belgian deep-pocket waffles cannot. These larger waffles can be heated in a toaster oven, range oven or microwave. Many also like the taste of waffles in their cold state.

Most square type waffle makers operate in a similar press-the-lid-down fashion. Belgian waffle makers however, might be either flip-style or regular and I find the flip-style to be very efficient when it comes to even baking. The flip design allows the batter to freely flow into every part of the waffle mold and this can bake a much nicer waffle, than the regular non-flip style.

Cheese Slicer

Name of item              : Cheese Slicer
Function                      : To help slicing cheese
How to clean               : use napkin to wipe it.

Cheese slicer is a kitchen utensil that is made to evenly and easily cut the various shapes and textures of cheeses into individual slices. The cheese slicer may consist of a tool similar to a knife with a blade, a tool with a "plane-like" surface, or a tool with wire that serves as the slicing mechanism.
The cheese knife is not always the most effective device for slicing cheese since semi-soft cheese is difficult to slice with a knife, soft cheese is impossible and only hard cheese can be effectively cut. Some cheese knives do work well for the harder varieties of cheese and often are equiped with a split or forked blade that can be used to stab pieces of cheese, fruits, cherries, or other condiments and can be used as a dual purpose knife, such as a bar knife.
A second type of cheese slicer is a broad metal slicer with an downward "plane-like" slicing blade cut into the slicer plane to provide a more effective tool for slicing individual pieces from a large block. Often considered to be a Scandinavian cheese slicer, this metal slicer is also best used for hard cheeses, slicing off thin pieces that can be place in sandwiches or served as an appetizer.
A third type of cheese slicer are those with a wire or wires connected to metal arms and connectors that hold the wire taut in order to easily slice through blocks of cheese. A roller may also be added parallel to the wire to assist with easily moving and maintaining the direction and width of the slice as the cheese is cut. Dual wire slicers are made so that one wire is placed close to the slicer shaft and the other slightly further away from the shaft. This allows two different widths of cheese to be sliced for serving. Although this type of slicer may not work well on very hard cheeses, it is effective at slicing semi-hard to very soft types of cheese.
The cheese slicer went into production in 1927 in Lillehammer and since then the factory has produced more than 50 million cheese slicers. However, with the production model used in the first few years it took an hour to complete the approx. 60 steps required to make the cheese slicer.
Ever since the original patent was registered in 1925, the design of the cheese slicer has not changed in principle. No major adjustments have been required since the slicer is designed to suit many types of cheese and it has worked well from the start.
Despite Thor’s patient, competitors soon started to manufacture copies, which resulted in a few legal disputes. Thor thought trying to keep competitors at bay would waste time and resources. Instead, he focussed on making his cheese slicer stand out though quality, better production methods and a good price. Today, Gudbrandsdal Industrier runs the business since Thor Bjørklund & Sønner AS went into administration in 2009 and Gudbrandsdal bought the bankruptcy estate.
